Jpp bass report 5/10/14

I fished out of Bryant's grove today. I bought a whole bunch of spinnerbaits last night and I was wanting to learn to fish them. I just put the trolling motor down and started smacking a 1/2 ounce small profile white/chart. spinnerbait with double willows off logs and rocks. I boated one 15.75" largemouth and lost one about that big. Both fish were hooked on the trailer hook. We went to my island I like to fish that has gravel on it. I was thinking to myself, I will try a carolina rig first, then fish a spinnerbait. I zeroed on the c rigged creature, but got a super chunky 15" largemouth on the spinnerbait. I only got two in the next few hours so I went to a spot that has chunk rock and shallow cover. I only had about 10 minutes left to fish and I had a 16" largemouth SLAM it next to the boat. He bent the crap out of the wire but it is still fishable.

I went home to eat and wait the rain out and launched at stewards creek 2 hours later. We started out getting DUMPED on for 10 minutes. We were soaked after that and my uncle was miserable. I fished a black/blue finesse jig with a trailer. I missed 4 buck bass. I know because I had one right next to the boat that jumped off. Nothing on the spinnerbait. We left after 3 hours

I am going to fish tommorow hopefully somewhere. Maybe get back on some bass from the bank or try some of my spots for bluegill. But still, I might get the urge to go catfishing so who knows.

Nice fish and a good time to gain confidence in a spinnerbait. Shad should be spawning/spawned which a white or silver spinnerbait with double willows is a nice bait to emulate that. Bass usually crush it then for weeks post their spawn. Fry love to hang around grass, docks and limbs in the water. There is a bank on OH that has bushes along the shoreline reaching into the water. Every year once the shad spawn you can pitch those bushes with a spinnerbait like a jig and usually get about three cranks out before getting hammered.

Travis beat me to the post, but that's exactly my thought. The first few weeks post spawn is a great time to fish a white spinner bait. They can be fished so many different ways. Try pitching one up into some over hanging brush and let it fall to the bottom. Then slowly reel it in so you can feel it bouncing along bottom, once the water deepens a little bit the bass will smash it coming down the drop off. Good luck, and some nice fish as usual buddy!

Nice fish Isaac! I have grown to love throwing a spinnerbait over the last couple years due to fishing G ville. They catch fish, you just have to have faith in them. I rarely hit the water without one tied on.

That's the one thing I have not done. I always throw worms at night. Maybe this summer After I rewire my black lights.

Yeah buddy!

That's my kinda night fishing on Percy. Turn the lights out, tie on a big single thumper and not pay attention. It works on OH as well but something about it on Percy is fun stuff.

There is another place that it's extremely effective....a place that OH and Percy have in common.

Spinnerbaits used to be my go-to lure, but now I seem to have lost all confidence in them. I always have one tied on and rarely leave a location without throwing it but they just aren't producing. I know Travis has talked about them before and I've tried to take his advice of 'do anything with them except reel them straight back in' but I'm still having no luck. I'll try the white spinnerbait though, I generally throw a green and white with double willow blades.

Does anyone have any topwater reports? I also rarely leave a spot without throwing a topwater, usually a zara spook. Haven't had much luck with that either, my best fish this year have come on texas rigged salamanders.
