Default Good evening bite at VFW.

Got into 20 good Gills at VFW from 5:30 to 8:00 today. These fish were 8-8.5 inches with an 8-8.5 inch girth. All males and fought like crazy. A great evening of fishing at a beautiful lake...life is good!

Regards

Alpha,

Looking at your pics. It looks like there's really good bank access there. What do you think of VFW as a place to take small children?

I'm looking for a place with mowed banks and shade. What are the bugs (ticks, chiggers, and skeeters) like? Weekday crowd?

Landon it is great bank access there and it is kept mowed like a golf course. Plenty of shade and a good place for kids. Through the week there are many times when I am the only one there. I have never gotten any ticks or chiggers on me down there but I am sure they are there. One of the reasons I think I have no issues with that is just how well they keep the grass cut. It has been a true gem for me over the years and is far more scenic and user friendly than Williamsport. It has plenty of trophy shell crackers and really good size Gills. There are bass there and a few large ones but it is not a bass lake full of trophies.

Yeah, I'm going to have to check it out. The drive is further, but I think time-wise about the same as Williamsport, when you consider time spent driving the gravel road back to the kids lake.

New vehicle or old.....I hate the roads at Williamsport. If you go much you can ruin a vehicle. TWRA has tried twice to get them paved but never any money. At least at VFW and Laurel Hill the roads are chirt and in pretty good shape...nowhere near the kind of dust at Williamsport.

I went to the VFW lake yesterday. No sure It is the same one you describe since I saw very little grass near the water.

It is really uniquely designed for fishing (great for family bank fishing) and is a beautiful lake. I drove around it and the banjos playing in the woods concerned me. Almost wished for 4 wheel drive.
Wind was fairly strong and I blame that for my lack of catching fish.
Saw to copper mouth cotton head moccasins within 2 feet of where I stood at the shore. I gave them all the room I could.

OK....where there is grass it is well maintained....LOL. Here are some pics for a virtual tour I took today returning from KY Lake.
