First off I learned that everyone that are in to Yakes are not tree huggers ... Most have average vehicles ... Small suv's, full to mid size pick ups .. They are into the vehicle that works for them ...

Now the Smart Car if you do your homework is one of the most dangerous, least efficient Gas mileage wise per ratio with the true eco vehicles out there ... IE. Nissan, Honda, Yota, etc. Smart Car with it's whopping 85 HP power train... This little vehicle gets less fuel economy than a diesel pickup truck... ... Plus for a tree hugger it probably feels great ... But for a realistic Kayaker ... He is embarrassing the sport ...

This guy or gal or both are driving their coffin ... as per the Vehicle Safety Board .... Suburban commuter...(That is what the Smart Car is Classified as) Yep Try down town Nashville in the morning and going home time ... There are no 72,000 pound semi's on the road ... or dump trucks ... or lets say an average 3500 pound Nissan Altima ... verses an 1600 pound Coffin ... ... Go Green !! <'TK><

PS ... Yesterday I witnessed a nice couple getting into their smart car at a Tiger Mart ... They had to slam their doors twice ... The vehicle weight jumped from 1600 pounds to 2600 pounds when everyone was aboard ... I would really not like to be around when the crash investigation unit arrived ... That would be a mess ....

I work with a lady that owns one and it only gets like 38 MPG. I parked beside her the other night and I am pretty sure I could put that thing in the back of my truck. One guy told me that the new thing is to go smart car tipping.

I saw that same car. We have a Honda Accord 4 Door and my wife will no longer drive it unless she has to. Yeah it gets good gas mileage, but she does not feel safe in it. I drive it, because like I said good fuel mileage, the ride is rough, but I'll put up with it until we can give it to her brother here in a few years, they live in a rural area in Indiana where there is not near as much traffic as we have here in Nashville.

Smart Car tipping was going on in San Francisco and I think it's hysterical. There is nothing "Smart" about this car when you total it from a collision with a bicycle. Stupid hippies.

I have not noticed to many off the cars anymore. I would think most people realize you can get good gas mileage out of larger cars, My wife had a VW VR6 Jetta that on the interstate got 32mpg and was fun to drive. I like the new commercials where they have a suburban or something sitting on top of the frame and they are talking about the strength of it.... Good luck with frame strength when that thing hits you head on or rear ends you.

I'm no fan of the Smart Car....and as you all say the MPG is not that great. People used to laugh when they would see me in a Nissan Versa with a kayak trailer in tow but I saved a lot of money with that vehicle. It just died at 250,000 miles....an agonizing death....LOL. If you have never been in a vehicle equipped with a CVT transmission and had it go into fail safe mode it is quite an experience. But it served me well for fishing all over the place. Wanted to buy the Nissan Frontier to replace it but knowing the miles I go to fish I had to stay with something that gets good MPG. So I got a new Ford Escape with the 2 liter turbo. Can tow up to 3500 pounds and used it to travel to Nickajack last week and got close to 30 MPG. So I'm good to go for another few years.

I'm going to say that pic is highly photoshopped. I don't believe for a second that a huge SUV could sit on that puny "Smart" car without any damage done to it.

Randy, the secret for a long life from a CVT (Constant Velocity Transmission) is keeping the serviced every 50K miles ... Which isn't cheap about $200 .... <'TK><

Did that TK. The pump went...or so I was told. Anyway no complaints about the car. I asked it to do a lot more than it was ever designed to do. Well built vehicle.

This whole exchange is predicated on the age-old American notion that bigger is always better. So we make fun of small things. Ha Ha, funny.

Take a look around the world, Asia and Europe, not just today but going back 100 years. Lots of small vehicles, or vehicles just big enough to do their job. If you made fun of everyone with a small car in Europe, you wouldn't have a lot of friends around.

This is America, so buy what you want, that's your right, but it's a bit silly to mock everyone who's interested in fuel economy or efficiency however. Gas isn't 25 cents a gallon anymore, and there's some major climate issues we have to deal with.

Kudos to folks who are using what they need and getting by.
