Default Wheeler Dam 4/4

A friend and I hit Wheeler Dam after the rains passed this morning. We were drifting 1/2 ounce jig heads with soft plastic bodies in the generating water. We were having almost no luck and the bite was incredibly slow. We switched to small 1/4 ounce hair jigs on 6lb test and started catching some really big white bass. They all weighed slightly over 3 lbs. No telling how many we caught but it was a lot. I then hooked into a really nice 6.5lb hybrid that gave me all I wanted on my light spinning rig. A little while later I hooked up again with an even bigger one. This one weighed in at 9lbs and is my personal best hybrid. Those things were a blast on light tackle. Amazing runs and a doubled over rod. My buddy also managed one smallmouth bass that was probably in the 2-3 pound range which really isn't that big for down there. Can't wait to get back there again. I love fishing Wheeler.

6.5 lb Hybrid

9 lb Hybrid

Nice fish.
I didn't know anyone on this forum fished Wheeler. It is my favorite place to fish. Unfortunately I haven't fished there in about 10 years.

I fished it a lot before 911. You could get to a boil before then. Now the only way to get up there is by boat. Among other fish I went there for the huge shell cracker.

Did you have the jig tipped with anything?

I love fishing there, and have had the most luck with chartruese spoons with 1/2 oz of weight, or a Little George. You can buy an Alabama license and go to Guntersville or Wheeler. When fishing below the dam there, technically, I think you are actually in Lake Wilson.

You can walk up now to the base of generator 1 on the side. However if one of those first generators aren't running then it is a long cast.
