03-22-2014 - Cumberland River - East Nashville
I went out Saturday morning with a couple of guys from the TKA group. We launched from Shelby park, paddled up and into the mouth of Mill Creek. I caught a small drum and a small spotted bass on shaky heads. younger guy with us caught a nice 2# spot. Was nice water in there. We than floated back down to Shelby. I was throwing a Rapala DT6 parallel to the riprap and caught 3 big drum in about a 15 minute window. Good fight in them! Pic of the biggest one.

those things are a blast to catch....most of the time they put a good smack on the lure too!

One of them nearly swallowed the crankbait. It was tough to get him unhooked without hurting him.

Sounds like a good trip. I waded Mill yesterday for the 1st time and got into the SM and Redeyes. I will be doing that some more this Spring the water clarity surprised me.

I work close to a couple of the Mill Creek greenways. I have thought about trying it.

man those things sure put up a fight!, nice one by the way!!, I think next time I catch on of those (but smaller) will introduce it to my frying pan, I've heard that despite their reputation as trash fish they ar very good table fare!

Nice drum blink. Sorry I backed out on you. I didn't get to sleep like I thought I was and earlier that day after I loaded everything up all electronics were dead in the truck, but the time I swapped everything over to the Subaru, and fixed dinner it was after 11pm almost 12am, and then on top of that I had to work Saturday afternoon. I'm glad you had others to go with you.

Transplanted,
They taste just fine. For the wife and I, we just don't care for the texture of the meat. Like we don't care for the texture of stripers or hybrids.
The 4 year old daughter loved it. People tend to follow the crowd in things like this, saying they are a trash fish, when in reality, they have never eaten one.
In Canada the smallmouth bass is akin to a carp in terms of the locals wanting to catch them. All they are good for up there is shore lunch, yet here in TN they are revered as gods.
To me, the smallmouth are tablefare!
So I say eat one and make up your own decisions on whether you like them or not.
We also don't like catfish so, to each their own!

Thanks Merv, back home I used to eat Carp (two different kinds) and it was good eating, you just have to know how to prepare it, I got into some Drums in Nickajack one day last year and released them all, I later kicked myself for that, they look a lot like a freshwater red Snapper, so next time i catch a decent size one it will be released in hot oil, thanks and cool (and heavy) stringer of Crappies by the way!!
