Default Blown lower unit

Well, Finally got around to dropping the boat off at the mechanics... He called today to tell me I sheared a gear in my lower unit and would need a new one. He said that the oil was a nice silver color with chunks floating in it. Thankfully he said that he has a used lower unit from a 2004 Johnson and would install it for 600.00 out the door, seems to be a pretty good deal. He said that only issue is that it's white..... so it does not match the motor! I told him I don't care put it on

Tell everyone it's white 'cause its custom tuned and is so fast, it strips the paint off. The white paint is primer and it is all that will stay on

What I do for that kind of money for my customers ... I buy the matching paint for $20 $$$ (Even though the lower unit is the most expensive part of a motor ... ) And just paint it ... Why didn't he just rebuild the lower unit with the bad gear and new seals ... Right now you are buying a used lower unit ...condition unknown ??? He's making money ... what kind of warrantee did he give you ??

Now I don't know who you are dealing with ... If he has a good lower unit that he knows for a fact do to servicing that it is a good unit ... You are not far from the ball park ... gears and seals can run you Hundreds $$$ plus labor ... Just my thoughts ... make sure you have a reputable dealer ... ...(but he could paint it ...I would ... <'TK><

Hey TK I am having Hank Parsley do it here in Murfreesboro. He acutally rebuilt my motor years ago when my oil pump went out and did great work. I am not sure on warranty but thats something I could check on. My motor is a 94 so it was pretty old and He offered to install a brand new aftermarket for around 1400.00 but I really did not want to put that much money in the motor. I kind of like that white lower unit, gives it character ya know

Smile Sounds good ... <'TK><

Jon, great... If you trust the shop no problem ... But I have seen folks take mtr. problems to questionable shops and got burned ... the outboards Transmission, like previously stated is the most expensive part of the outboard ... Just trying to look out for my members .... <'TK><

PS ... Pull the prop and mask the lower unit off and paint it international Orange like the old stingers ... That would be a conversation piece !!! LOL !!

Thank you for the concern sir. My dad has known hank for years and he has done work for us before so I do trust him. I like the orange idea. I am drawn to loud obnoxious colors so something like that would work.

I am selling my john boat to help pay for the lower unit if anyone is intersted, check it out in the gear for sale section. I can promise you all the boat does is catch fish.... not just any fish but BIG fish!

I am sorry about your lower unit. I am with you about a white motor.
