Anybody ever use leeches for live bait rigs or tipping thier jigs down here? water is probably too cold for them to be very good this time of year, but during the warmer months, you stick a leach thru the sucker and the action/waving they have is too much for fish to take, they cant resist it, especially walleyes!.....do the creeks/drainage ditches down here have them in them?

Most of the leeches that we have are politicians. Might be a problem for you if one drowned on your hook.

More like the leeches are the people who vote for certain politicians!

yeah perhaps i check into the fishing regulations before i go and get busted with fishing contraband if they are not abundant around here they may not be a welcome addition to the eco system.
i havent seen them down here either so i figured i would ask.

So judging by the responses, politics is a touchy subject huh? LOL, whew! im glad i voted for the big O' like the rest of you guys clearly did or this country might be in a bad place and this comment be made akward. HA HA HA HA HA!!!!! Totally kidding! (dont cut me off from the fishing secrets...please) LOL.

I have never used live leeches, only artificial ones. I know they are very popular up north and have read about using live ones as long as I remember.
As a kid I got leeches on me in the creeks. I think they were different than the ones used up north. I am cautious of most things that suck on humans.

What about slugs, I have a pretty good supply, just haven't ever tried them.

What used to be used down here.....and many still do use them.....is spring lizards. They are a deadly bait for bass.....and I would suppose for walleye too.

Im just looking for that little bitt of an edge that most guys might not use but are universal genetically bred into fish....like smallies and crawfish. Anywhere in the world that has smallies but no natural crawfish, a smallie knows good eats and wont hesitate! and if i can drag a wiggly little leach in front of a crabby, lock jawed 'eye, i think that will be the difference between fresh filets and a $0.99 filet o'fish from Mc D's. Lol
Then again i might go slipping and sliding in a creek for no reason other than a funny story to share on here! HA!

The Big "O" ??? Surely you don't mean who I think you mean !!! And believe me "The rest of you guys" didn't either ... Tennessee is a red state ...

After my last trip to Canada and Minnesota, I thought yea ... why not leeches here in middle Tennessee ... So I ordered a box from up north ... they arrived and I fished religiously with them ... This was in the mid 90's ...

After totalling my data after two years I determined I caught more fish with the domestic natural bait from our area ... I.E. Night crawlers out numbered the catch ratio via the leeches ... We are talking eyes, sauger, and Smallies ... <'TK><

That always amazed me about night crawlers. why do they work so good? i understand its a natural bait and all, but how many actual worms make it to the water for all the fish to know what they are? Its not like there are schools of worms roaming the depths of our waters like shad! The wonder of nature i suppose. lol
