Pickwick 12-03-2013

Went to Pickwick today to see what was going on down there. Started out in the tailrace. Started fishing the cutback about 40 yards down the sidewalk. First cast a nice white bass.....about 15 inches. I load him on the stringer hoping for more and hoping for some big females also. Next cast another solid 15 inch male....they were all spilling milk. Two more casts and two more fish. I'm thinking going to be an awesome day. That was it for the whites....LOL. Casted for another hour and didn't get another one. First 4 casts and 4 fish....LOL. Headed over to lock side to see if crappie were there...and they were but all of them at 8 and 9 inches. Decided I was getting lemons so I needed to make lemonade. Went to entrance of lock and tied on a 6mm Smoothie tungsten head and put a Bison Trout Magnet on it. Cast to the wall of lock and let it sink to bottom and started twitching along bottom. As I would get to halfway point in the cast a nice 8 inch Gill hits it. I proceeded to catch around 40 of those...almost on every cast. The Gills did not have much color...I'm assuming because of the depth.....25 feet. So it turned out to be a good day for me. Not another soul was on generator side or by the lock. Will hit it again next week.

Way to turn it around and make a good day.

I am trying decide how bad I want to get wet Thursday. The fish are calling but so far haven't decided to pick up the phone yet.

Are you sure that was a white bass? Looks more like a small striper to me from the picture. Nice catch either way and those gills do look strange!!

It's a white. All of them were. Was hoping for some stripers....but nothing...water was very clear.

I'm trying to figure out weather for Nickajack on Friday. Don't want to get caught trying to come back across Monteagle with ice.

nice fish Mr Randy, the gill looks well colored to me!! I guess I was more interested on its size instead, how long do you count your jig to 25 ft? Mr Randy and what is the weight on the tungsten jig??

Thanks....it takes about 40 seconds for it to drop. I keep my bail open so it can pull out line during drop. It weighs about 1/16. Hopefully the weather will be halfway decent next week for me to try again down there.

40 seconds!!, gosh I guess I have been a little impatient since I only let it fall for 30 seconds on deep water and that is if I'm showing restraint!, so I guess I need to slow down even more from the begining, I remember you previously told me to leave the bail open so the line does not swing right back at you so that part I have been doing, and yes I switch to 2 lb line down from 4 lb and I have seen an improvement on my catch ratio, thank you so much for the advice!!

The fish will be in liquid water. Not sliding on frozen water.
