Quick tips for JPP Crappie

I'm not much of a crappie fishermen but I sure do love to eat them and plan to spend a few hours looking for them tomorrow. I usually do this in other people's boats. It's not as easy out of a kayak as it is in a boat where you can constantly troll and cover a lot more water. I do, however, know where there are plenty of submerged brushpiles in the areas I fish. I spot them on the graph and drop plastic worms to catch bass. I'm going to buy an anchor to stop myself over them and drop crappie magnets to them.

Just wanting to know about the depth of water I'd find them this time of year. Water temps are holding in the mid 70's right now. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. Plus, my wife would be happier with my fishing obsession if I brought home a few meals worth of fresh crappie

black and chartreuse jigs, minnows and bobbers, look for brush piles in 12-16 FOW. Don't park on top of them, stay off to the side and cast to them.
Start fishing at ten ft then vary depths til you find active fish.
They'll probably be slow after the cold front we had this week. I've got an anchor you can have.

Well I really appreciate it but I was just gonna pick up one on my way home from work today since Im going tomorrow morning to fish. I have crappie mags in several colors. I'll find brush and/or groups of fish and anchor few feet away and let the CM do it's job.

Crappie Magnet is great for crappie....but don't forget the Trout Magnet is just as good. Crappie fishing out of a kayak can be a great way to get them. I have trolled and had good success also. Merv is dead on about finding the depth to get them. Crappie will not go down to get your lure....you have to be above them. I just count down in seconds and remember the number once I start catching them. If you are catching fish and they stop it is more than likely they are still there....just decided to quit feeding..they will start up again and you might want to try a different color if they stop biting. Hope you get them.

I've done plenty of crankbait trolling on JPP from the yak and never caught anything. Too much work for zero fish. I'd rather spot them on the graph and use trout or crappie mags!
