Default An epic battle.

Decided to go out to Williamsport this afternoon. Have had some obligations the past two days and gave been fishing a little locally....and not catching much. Started out at Shell Cracker and only caught the one Shell Cracker. Thought about just going on home but decided to try Blue Cat. Caught one small Gill and a few short crappie. Then it hit. I knew what it was as soon as the line started screaming. I was fishing with a 7' 2" G Loomis Trout Rod and had 2# test NanoFil line with a 3# test fluorocarbon leader. Was using a 5mm tungsten tear drop jig head with a gold and orange Trout Magnet body. Was just crawling it along the bottom when it hit. The first run got into the backing on the reel....had about 90 yards of NanoFil on and the backing was 2# test SOS line. Got most of that back and he took off again once again getting down to the backing. I thought I had him then but he made one more run of about 40 yards. I didn't feel secure until I lipped him. Made some quick photos and got a quick measurement....21 inches....revived him and with a big kick off he went to fight another day. Wasn't really expecting that fish to hit but it sure felt good. Off to Pickwick tomorrow.

Wow nice! A 21" hybrid on that light tackle must have been a blast!! Did you say you are coming out for the event Saturday?

Great catch!

I think the best thing about fishing 2lb test is how crazy the fights are. I caught a typical 2 and 1/2 lb largemouth bass in the creek this summer and it felt like a 40lb salmon. It ran all over and jumped and almost got into snags 3 different times. Even the final runs before I lipped it were hard to stop.

Great fun! and way more difficult than on 17lb test

Yea Jim it is a lot of fun....especially if you are not expecting it. I was just trying to hook up with some Gills. The only time I really target big fish with the 2# test is when I target Smallies and go trout fishing. But more often than not when Gill fishing you will get a large mouth on there and a heck of a commotion breaks out...LOL. Going to try at Pickwick tomorrow for some Gills in the lake and go below the dam to try for whites and stripers....won't be using any 2# test below the dam....LOL.

Yep....plenty of trophy bass...hard to get though. Also has a lot of hybrids. Blue Cat and Shell Cracker have literally thousands of crappie right at the 9 inch mark. Don't know what will happen with them. There is plenty of shad to feed them in both lakes but there are way too many in there. Only time will tell how that comes out. There are a lot of Gills but in the past couple of years the average size has gone down....over harvesting in my opinion.

You are right about that Jeremy...LOL. Just happened to be at the right place at the right time. I caught some 4 inch long white bass out there yesterday.....very concerned about that. Being such a small lake that could get out of hand.
