Default Motor trouble but tried to make the best of it

I tried to go bass fishing on Priest for a couple hours after work tonight since Ill be fishing the FLW tournament this weekend. I launched at Smith Springs and had made it half way up Suggs Creek went my lower unit went out. Thankfully I have a 75lb thrust trolling motor on my little 14ft boat. So as I started the long troll back to the ramp, I figured I might as well tie on a shad rap and fish my way back.

About half way back, something hit my shad rap and started ripping drag. After a good 5 minute fight on 6lb fluorocarbon, I landed a 3.15lb Hybrid, my first ever. At least I think it's a hybrid?



My motor going out still stinks but this made the night a little better. Any recommendations on a reputable outboard shop would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

... Congrats on a nice catch ... A little perplexed here ?? If was going to fish a tourney I would be Hell Bent on getting my rig fixed ASAP ... Why do you say lower unit went out ?? what does that mean ?? <'TK><

Thank you. I'm signed up as a co-angler for the tourney so my rig isn't necessary. I had an incident before where I had a bad seal on the drain plug on my lower unit and all of my lower unit grease leaked out. Lower unit locked up on me. I filled it back up and put new seals on the plugs and its run fine for about 6 months up until last night. I'm assuming damage from that incident finally reared its head.

Did you pressurize your lower unit to see where it was leaking (Between 5 to 7 PSI) ... Drain and vent plug seals very, very rarely cause a problem even sometimes when they are missing .... You have another leak somewhere ... Shift linkage, Upper Drive shaft seal (It's below the water pump) or output shaft seal ...

I had a 225 HP Merc 3.0 liter Blue water 23 inch shaft on my Guide Boat That I never could stop from leaking ... I rebuilt it twice and the factory rebuilt it twice ... What I had to do was run Quicksilver High Performance lower unit oil ... If you let the motor set for three days the water and oil will separate .... The water will go to the bottom when you pull your Drain plug the water will leave ... When you see the oil you can add it back to the lower unit ... You do not have to completely drain and refill ... This oil mixes with water to continue to lubricate ... At anytime you see milky oil it has water in it ... Hope this helps ... <'TK><
