I prefer to drag my worm in short slow sweeps of the rod then soft hop if it hits something like a rock or stick. To each their own on that though as I am sure every does it a bit differently. But two of the biggest mistakes most make when not catching fish on worms (in my opinion) are: moving it too fast and moving it too much meaning distance. It doesn't take much of a raise in the rod tip to move a bait a long ways on the retrieve. Most crayfish, snakes, eels, lampreys or whatever else they think it is won't move feet at a time.
You can catch fish on cranks a night I am just partial to keeping hooks out of my head when fishing with someone. Solo I will throw one but its not my first choice. It seems that crayfish patterns worked more for me at night than baitfish but I'd assume fish eat both during that time.
