Caney in boat while generating

Curious about fishing the caney in a boat while they are generating. I've waded the Caney for trout prior to generation, but never fished from a boat while generation has started. Seems like it would be hard to battle the current. Putting in at the dam fishing the first few miles is the idea. Is this a bad idea or something people do? Not at night, afternoon till dusk. Would the bigger trout be biting at this time or what type of fish should I pursue. Fellow ask me at work about putting his duck boat in and trying this. I normally wade it, but have never been questioned about doing this. I didn't have an answer. I hoping someone on here might be able to help. Bad idea or something to consider trying.

If you want to catch some big browns it's a great idea. As long as you pay attention to what you are doing.....try to stay in middle of river and quarter cast to the left...right....where trout may hang out. If you are alone...or even with someone.....a tiller steer works better for this...IMHO. It's not that hard...but always be careful. Your idea is a good one....drift the first couple of miles.....then run back up and drift down again. Throw some good cranks and get ready to be amazed at what hits them...and if no hits you will be in awe of the follows you get.

I personally would throw some cranks in a brown trout color. Trout Magnet sells some great cranks...3.5 inch in brown trout.....if there is only one generator going. They work great....but if two generators are going you will need something that gets a little deeper. This is what browntrout and I use for two generators http://www.xcaliburtackle.com/twitch.asp but they are hard to find and are costly...XCalibur quit making them. But Trout Magnet will soon be making that same lure and use the brown trout colors. But there are other cranks that work well also.

How big is his duck boat?

I have put my fiberglass bass boat in it using the campground ramp but that was on 11,500 cfs (3 generators). The bluff side ramp below the Dam is long and shallow so I'd use the campground. You shouldn't have a problem launching on a generator but just be mindful of some shallow areas. Anything more than a generator its not much issue and you can go anywhere on the river in a normal size boat. It's just on one generator that you need to keep an eye out unless you're in a shallow draft river boat.

I sometimes go with one of my fly fishing buddies and take my spinning rod. We are in a Riverhawk with a 20hp motor and we just ride up to the dam and float down then do it again and again. He throws big streamers to mimic shad and I use a 6-7 foot medium heavy rod and throw my imitations. I have had good luck around timber with Rapala X raps, weightless 4" flukes in shad color and small Yo Zuris in smaller sizes. Those big browns are meat eaters and seem to like what I threw. Correct statement earlier about floating down the middle and casting at the bank. Fish cheaper lures if you try and thread the needle between trees though. I found that with the Yo Zuri you have to keep your retrieve somewhat steady and you will often see the fish following. As hard as it is, try to keep reeling same speed. On to two generators going is better for this than zero. Try and present your lure as if it was being flushed down the river.

His boat I think he said was a war eagle. Not sure the size of the engine. I sure appreciate all the info. I wasn't sure if it was a good idea, but it sounds like you all have plenty of experience. Can't wait to give it a try.
