Default Crappie and Gills 4/23

Man it was windy today!

Fished for a couple hours with the trout magnets on my honey hole. Caught 11 crappie (4 keeper size) and 5 bluegill (2 keeper size) but all were released. They hit a black/chart and white/chart trout magnets fished without a float and slow steady retrieve no twitching. I anchored upstream from where I wanted to fish then with the aid of the wind could cast a mile past. A slow steady crank back resulted in several fish and more missed due to the wind putting a belly in the line.

It looks like the crappie will be plentiful there for some time to come. As of last year, I had never caught one below 10 inches. Then late last year caught a couple under, this year I have caught several 6-8" ones and now the attached really small one. Just hope the boom in population doesn't hurt the top end as there are 14-15" fish among them.

Fun times!!

Nice fish! Great colors on those Gills. I couldn't find anyway to get out of....or cast down wind.....fishing the bank at Willamsport today. Did get some good ones though....but conditions were tough for a UL guy.

Regards

Nice fish.

I tried the TM last weekend without split shot, and changed the retrieve to super slow with occasional twitch. Got about 7 gills, and missed a couple.

I couldn't avoid it today either instead sat right in it. Took a piece of 10 ft pipe that I fashion into a park pole for the wind. Paddled out to the "spot" which I knew pretty comfortably was no deeper than 4-6 ft and as I plunged it into the bottom of the lake the pipe made a lovely bloooop sound (note to self...deeper than 10 ft in that spot).

Luckily my small anchor hung in a tree or limb that stuck us.

Nice catches, Travis. It sure was windy out today, wasn't it? My aluminum boat was all over the marina lagoon today and it took me 3 tries to get it on the trailer. That's why I don't go on weekends when it's crowded LOL

Thanks! Yeah, I was rowing the polarkraft today. To get to my spot its only a hundred yards or so but it was all against the wind. Water was splashing on strokes getting mini me wet but she's half fish anyway.

Rowing in that wind....even only 100 yards gave you a pretty good strain. I'm ready for it to calm down.

Speaking of wind Alpha, what's your stake-out pole made of? How long is it?

Made from some sort of tough fiberglass....is 8 foot long and it floats if you should drop it in the water. It sure makes fishing for Gills and crappie much easier when you find them. Wish I had it last year.
