Tactics For Tailwater Trout

This was an interesting read and may help out some us trout chasers. I am not sure how long ago this was written as it still lists the brown from Arkansas as the world record and some of the cranks listed are older models but good info none the less.
Here is a quote to get you interested from guide Fred McClintock (TN):
"Last year I was guiding a party for stripers on the Cumberland River in Kentucky, pulling foot-long gizzard shad on planer boards. While I was reaching for a cold drink, my client shouted that he had a nibble. Well, stripers don’t nibble; they plaster a bait. I told him it was probably just his shad kicking, but he insisted his bait was being bothered by a fish. When he asked, “Hey Fred, are stripers orange?” I turned around and saw a giant brown trout, way over 25 pounds, swimming away with his shad. Before I could yell to him to set the hook, it spit out the bait and swam off."

Travis thanks for that. It was a good read. I am going to have to try some jigs one day. Did I send you the video link to the zig jig? If not I will send it to you. I thought about going today but black eyed peas and cornbread and football were calling my name.

Seeing how they fish them, I don't see any way they wouldn't work especially in high water. The jerk would make it seem like a darting or struggling baitfish.

I happened to have read this same article a while back and was fishing the TM for some stockers a few weeks ago and couldn't buy a hit then I remembered the more aggressive style in the article and the zig jig style and started hoppin and droppin the TM and caught quite a few... you never feel the hit when you hop it they are just there...regards.

Check out this video. I would love to go there and catch 1 of these. Not a tailwater but still looks fun. Hard to believe 30+ pound rainbow trout.

Those are triploid rainbows. They are sterile and can grow HUGE quicker than normal trout.

Haven't seen any of those pulled out of the Caney but I'd sure love to! Good article, I enjoyed reading it. I never heard of jig fishing for trout before, I may have to try it.

I enjoyed that article. During 11k cfs on the Caney does anyone know of any spots that one could fish from bank?

Several people have some luck fishing from the steps right by the dam. I think they use big Kast Master spoons but I am not sure. Maybe someone else will post. I did see a fellow catching some stockers from the boat ramp on the campground side the other day also. I think he was drowning corn.

If Alpha sees this maybe he will post his heart breaking story about one that he caught at the ramp at Happy. Does not have a happy ending.

No secret...but maybe not many know the slew by the ramp at Happy holds huge fish during generation. I have caught several 6# Browns out of there and had a Brown in double digits get off right as I had it 2 feet from me on the ramp. I have caught a 30 plus pound Striper....I have seen bigger in that slew during high water. Spooky big! Plus it holds Spots and Bows also.
