Nickajack 11-06-2012

Arrived at the lake at 6:15 AM and started fishing at 7:00 AM. It was raining pretty heavy on me until about 8:30 AM. The bite was real good until about 8:30. I had 13 fish by that time. It took me an hour and fifteen minutes to get the last two fish. I had a couple of fish at 13 inch and the rest were at 11 inches or maybe just a little over. Before I left fellow forum member jaycee showed up. I fished with him last year...super nice guy. He had several fish before I left and I feel that if he stayed the fish would have turned back on before dark. As has alway been the case the Crappie at Nickajack have broad shoulders....they make nice filets. An 11 inch Crappie at Pickwick this year is really not worth bringing home...unless you clean it whole. Hopefully will fish a couple of more days this week. Water where I fish is still in mid 60's. Still hoping for the 14 and 15 inch fish to take over the place.

Nice fish again! I'm hoping to get out on the Cumberland this weekend. I got some good tips from txnative on where to look for crappie so armed with an ultralight, some trout magnets and some hair jigs, I'm going to give it a shot.

Alpha, do you prefer the trout magnets over the crappie magnets?
I have not tried the larger crappie magnets yet.

Well if I am at Pickwick and fishing for Crappie I prefer the Crappie Magnet....if at Nickajack I will have on the Trout Magnet. I have also caught good Crappie at Percy with the Crappie Magnet. I have no clue as to why the Crappie at Nickajack readily hit the Trout Magnet and prefer it over the larger Crappie Magnet. I am sure it has to do with the size and I keep reminding myself that each body of water is different when it comes to lures...and colors. I have and use other lures. I am finding more and more that smaller is better for quite a few specie of fish. bd mentioned this in another thread about when he used to fish with micro jigs and flies for panfish.

Good to have those hair jigs along with you. Crappie can get very picky with what they want to eat.
