Default Boat motor work

A buddy of mine and I just acquired an old Ranger boat with a 1984 Merc 65 hp outboard on it. It is not peeing water and I am thinking it needs a new impeller. Do any of you know any good people to work on a motor like that? TK, would you want to do something like this, or is it too new for ya?

I pulled off the end of the pee hole and it was clogged, and I pulled more out of the hose. Then when I restarted it, I could see air coming out of the hole and it dripped just a few times, and then I shut it off, but no peeing yet.

Unfortunately we just got the boat, picked it up, started right up, we were flying across the lake, we never thought to check to see if it was circulating water, made it about 300 yards and it over heated. I sure hope we didn't do any damage in the engine. But it still starts right up after it cooled down.

I had that happen once when I launched. The impeller was less than a month old. I figured a dobber had been in the pee tube. My son found a piece of .095 line from a string trimmer on the ramp. I ran it in the tube and dirt fell out. I started the engine and more dirt and a dobber larvae shot out.

I now double a piece of the line and leave it in when stored. I leave about 4 inches of line hanging out. It is red so I notice it when removing rear tie downs.

I burnt up a small motor not paying attention to it peeing. After that one, every motor I buy now, I just go ahead and have a new one put in(on my small motors 50 to 150 bucks). I have been told it needs to be replaced every other year if not every year. It is a cheap maintence issue, that overlooked, can cost thousands of dollars. TK how often do you think they should be changed?

Mike I sent this to your PM but I never heared from you ?? <'TK>< Mike sounds like a simple Water Impeller replacement ... But merc's are notorious for passage way stoppages .... Has the motor set up??? and if so How long ... Looking for insects that fly in the canals and build nests ... worst problem for a Merc ... but the Water pump Imp sounds like the culprit ... Might as well change the lower unit fluids ... Has this been done lately ???

Mike, yes we can do this I have a couple in front of you though ... It may be a week or two before I can get to it .... <'TK><
