Caney Fork Thursday Occurence

I heard some guys got thrown out of a boat and it split in the pond yesterday...any one know about this?

Wordty ... what does Split in the pond mean ...(what Pond) I have lived on the Caney for 25 years and have never heard this term ??? are you talking below the Dam <'TK><

Hey TK...yes, sorry for not being clear...the area below the dam...I heard Friday night (tonight) from a fly fisherman that yesterday there was a Gheenoe with two guys in it in the area below the dam...anyway, when the generation or sluice came on (according to this story I heard) the waves got pretty big and the guys couldn't stay in the boat...and the boat was damaged or torn in two...anyway, this is all "what I heard"...just seeing if anyone else heard this

For years I have heard the area below the dam called "The Pond". At the time I first heard it I also did not know what folks were talking about. Joel...at Big Rock Deli...has lived there for well over 35 years I guess and he was always talking about "The Pond". I have read several articles on the Caney and the articles referred to "The Pond"....and those articles were written over 10 years ago....so I don't know how long it has been called the Pond....or who came up with the term. Be neat to know who came up with the term. As for anyone being in the Pond when the sluice gates are turned on...well good luck with that. That wave action could tear up a lot of boats.

AHawk ... yea I have known Joel Martin and family for over 20 Years ... (old Harley Days with Waylon Johnson and Joel) And Have guided on the Caney for that long and my cabin was on the Caney in Lancaster ... ... But I never (if I did) have ever heard this label the Pond ... It's always been for me below the Dam ?? But you know At my age I may have heard that but my old memory just let it go LOL !!! <'TK>< I don't text and my cell phone goes RING ! RING !

I hadn't heard about this but I'm not surprised. When the sluice is wide open and they're generating, there is a wicked back eddy that can draw a boat in if you get too close. The "pond" area below the dam is not safe when the sluice is wide open. I pulled four people out of the water (2 adults and 2 kids) last year when they tried to launch an overloaded canoe during generation with the sluice open.

Haven't heard about this either. Like bd said that back eddy is a son of a buck. Hopefully since nothing much else is known they were able to get out okay.

Here is the latest release from Center Hill on Thursday since were on the topic on sluice/generation.

"Generation Schedule: 7 a.m. - Noon, 0 units. Noon - 4 p.m., 1 unit. 4 p.m. - Midnight, 0 units.

Please remember, this schedule is subject to change at any time without notice.

An orifice gate will be open allowing 250 cfs flow until further notice.

Sluicing will be: 0900-1100 Mon.-Thurs. and 0900-1000 Fri.-Sun. until further notice.
(Each generation hour will be coordinated with sluice ...
gate releases to improve water quality.)
