Default Caney Sunday 4/15

Took dad out for his first fly fishing trip. The water is really low but word from the Corps is the sluice will be back soon and on until further notice. That will help a whole bunch especially down around Happy.

We caught no fish unfortunately on flies then around mid-day moved up river to the Dam and took out the spinning rods looking for any fish since wind picked up a whole bunch. I ended up catching some trout on a trout magnet.

A few photos from the trip.

Here is dad and I standing on the doorstep of his new hobby...

For a beginner, I was proud at how he took to it. Never tangled or messed up his leader and only snapped off 1 fly. Wish I could say that much for my first day.

Like a duck to water...

Finally some fish wanted to play. I caught 4 or 5 of these with this one being the biggest. None were "stocker" size instead a little broader and thick. His eyes really lit up when this one hit and made several runs and jumps on 2lb test. Dad said, look at that fish its a big one... I smiled because he's really a baby in here. Just wait until dad tangles with him on a fly rod. He'll be hooked for life.

All in all great times with dad and I can't wait to go back. He kept saying as soon as I get some more practice, I am really going like this refering to fly fishing. Can't wait...just one more way now we can spend time together.

Good times...

Nice pics, and I envy your dad. A friend of mine tried to teach me how to use a fly rod back in Korea and after about 15 minutes of looking and feeling like a fool, I vowed to stick with spinning and baitcaster reels/rods

Thanks, I hope he sticks with it. I grew up and still fish with regular gear but really love trying to catch fish on the fly and the reward of it actually happening.

Good fish. Got to get started on the Caney before the water gets too bad. They have stared the 250CFS release way early this year. If you read the Corps Facebook page for the Caney they tell you it is already in a water conservation mode. We need rain.

Regards

We have been hurting for rain and lets hope they don't use up all their cool reserve early this year. We are due a late summer hurricane rain or two.
