Default Father and Son fishing Pickwick 9-26-11

Had a great day at Pickwick with my son. It was his first outing at good size Stripers and we both had a ball. The White Bass today were BIG...had a ball with those too. All fish caught on a Salt and Pepper Crappie Magnet on a 1/8 ounce jig head or a Killer Klatt Crappie Magnet. The rod is a 7 foot Drop Shot rod light, action and reel was spooled with 10# test NanoFil. These fish were all over this size bait. Lots of people fishing throwing big top water baits.....throwing 1/2 ounce lead heads with 3 or 4 inch curly tail......their catch rate was about one to our 7. The minnows that are in there are still very small. A guy below us was throwing a 2 inch long lip-less crank bait and was tearing them up also. You tell them to put on something that small and they don't get it. Match the Hatch! I did not count but we caught a lot...left early just because we were tired. If anyone is wondering did we get into any bigger ones...yes we did. They liked the small offering also but we could not turn them. When we would put the pressure to them as best we could with 10# test the hook would straighten. Tried 1/4 and 1/2 ounce jig heads with the Crappie Magnets but I guess they liked the slower fall rate of the 1/8...we could not get a hit on the heavier jig heads. It was fun watching my son get a big one on and trying to slow the spool with just a slight touch of his finger and he could not do anything....LOL. I had 5 pounds of drag dialed in on these fish and those big ones just kept going. Will have to find a 1/8 jig head with a bigger hook...LOL.

Man!! Alphahawk! You sure know how to make a guy jealous!! I may have to head that way sometime soon! Where do you drive there from? And how long are these fish going to be there? I also need to learn how to fish these crappie and trout magnets! I still have not gotten any. Last time on the Caney, Big Rock Market was all out of them. If you ever need some company let me know Keep livin the dream!!!

I live in Columbia, TN. All I do is fish. My son lives in Goodletsville and drives to my house and we go down together. As to how long I would say they will be in there...maybe 3 more weeks. The bait is in there by the millions and as long as it is there I expect the Stripers and White Bass to be there...I am still waiting for the 4 to 7 pound Large Mouth to show up down there as they usually do. But Whites and Stripers are funny creatures. They can and do travel 55 miles in a day searching for food....or just to head out somewhere different. Oh......and TVA has to keep a lot of good flow coming through there or you catch nothing.

Yeah it was a lot of fun Travis. My son really enjoyed that. When a good one would hit and start pulling drag headed for Kentucky he had this look on his face..."What do I do now"....LOL. Hopefully next trip we will take a bigger rod as I want him to get in one of those 20 pound fish. He has turned into a very good fisherman. Really the problem was not the rod..as he had a heavy rod with him...but the line. His rod was spooled up with 20# test braid and that will not cast a 1/8 size bait very far. I am going to pay the money and buy him a 300 yard spool of 12# test NanoFil and with the drag set at 5 or 6 pounds the fish will eventually stop before he pulls off 300 yards. We only had the 150 yards on the reels yesterday but when the big ones hit we got close to being spooled so you had to break off or straighten the hook with pressure or we were going to lose 19 dollars worth of line.

Travis,
If you want to make a trip out there, I'll split gas $ with you. Let me know when.

Shoot man its not about the gas. Its the roughly 7hrs round trip that will be a killer and that is from my house. Not to mention getting wore out catching fish.

I'll live vicariously through Alphahawk for the time being.

Speaking of trips.... you guys driving or fly to FL next week? Be safe and have fun. It will be the highlight of her young life.

I don't mind driving...I put in about 7 hrs of it a day at work. We're driving to FL, my car gets over 30 mpg and that makes it cheaper than flying, plus I don't gave to limit what I take.

I'll be back on the 8th, and will be on the water somewhere on the 9th.
