Default Pickwick 9-20-11

Spent all day at Pickwick. The fish are stacked in there like cord wood. I mostly used a med-light rod with 6# test fluorocarbon..it is tough stuff. I don't know how many fish you can catch in 8 hours of fishing...catching a fish 9 out of every 10 casts made...but it is a lot. The Stripers were all about the same size...as most of you know they school in similar sizes. The White Bass that are in there now are big. Had to fish the 3# test rig with Trout Magnet under the float....catching Bluegill about one foot from the bank at about one foot depth.....to give my back a break. The Bluegill were not big but feisty and fat as mud with all the minnows they are eating. I had an absolute ball. While it was fun to catch the Stripers the White Bass gave me all I wanted.....they just fight hard. The Striper just make that initial run and it is pretty much over. I caught a few small Spots and some Large Mouth but nothing of much size to them. I suspect there were many more Black Bass there but the White Bass and then the Stripers were beating everything else to the lure.....which was a 1/8 ounce "Killer Klatt" Crappie Magnet. Have to take Wednesday off and rest the back....but be assured I will be back at Thursday morning...God willing.

Regards

Impressive. I may have to invest in a true ultralight if my luck doesn't improve...or I may just go down to pickwick, since the fish seem to hate me here in middle tn, lol.

Thanks guys. It was hard not to catch fish there yesterday. I have some pretty good fishing skills but anyone there would have caught fish. Now having said that all the guys on the catwalk were using huge Striper poles and throwing huge stick baits. There is a time for that and I had an excellent Striper rod in the car spooled with 65# test Power Pro. But those 15 ponders were not there. So why wear myself out with the big rod when it is not called for. Another thing is the minnows that are there right now are the perfect size and color of the bait I was throwing....match the hatch. I think that is why I was getting a fish on almost every cast. I keep checking my flat for the Large Mouth to move up..and they will any day I think. Then should be tying into some 3 to 7 pound Large Mouth. Life is good!

Great report.

Looking forward to at least getting around some water this weekend and fishing when time permits. I haven't been able to wet a line for a week or so now and its killing me. Hopefully the trout will be willing to play.
