Default Questions about Kayak fishing

I have been watching the kayal fishing show on WFN and have a few question:

Stability - Is it practical to stand up in the kayak (I see that occasionally on the shows). I am 59 years old, 6 feet tall, and weigh about 260.

What size kayak would you recommend?

Paddle or the foot operated system like Hank Parker uses on his show.

I live in the McMinnvile area and would like to fish some of the small streams in the area.

Can you squirrel hunt from a kayak?

How much does it cost to get setup with a kayak?

Thanks

Default Kayak Fishing on TV

I think the name of the show is "Kayak Fishing". It is on WFN (World Fishing Network (my wife hates it)). Last week they were Striper fishing on the Chesapeake Bay at night. We signed up for a sports package on Charter Cable that included four outdoors channels ... It was only about $5/month extra. Much bettervthan just having Versus.

I am not making any comments on hunting from a yak, as i don't hunt. I'm sure midtnkayakangler can help you out there.

Fishing-wise, stability depends on the modrl and fisherman. I have a narrow yak and can stand...very carefully. I can't fish while standing. The jackson coosa seems far more stable, though, and is designed to fish in moving water.

Based on what mtka has told me, a paddle would be better in a river or creek since you don't have to worry about damaging the drive system if you bump a log, rock, or run aground.

The best advice i can give is to look various yaks, take note of their specs n layout, call dealers with specific questions, and test some out on the water.

The guys at the riverfishin forum recommend tha Jackson Coosa. I watched a Youtube video and the guy is standing up and fishing. Is there a dealer for these kayaks in middle TN?

I cannot answer your question on hunting from a kayak. I have a friend that uses his Jackson Coosa as a duck blind over in east Tennessee and does very well. I don't know about squirrel hunting though, but I used to do it out of a canoe back in Indiana. You will have to consult with a TWRA Specialist.

Standing and fishing is very possible out of a kayak Wilderness Systems, Jackson, Hobie, Ocean Kayak, and several other manufactures make kayaks that would make this possible.

I suggest a SOT (Sit on Top) and something that is a little wider. The wider the more stable.

Like txnative said "kayaks with a drive system are better suited for little to no current, in deeper waters with not many obstructions".

I've herd of the show on WFN, but I don't have that channel. Comcast dosen't carry it.

The price varies with getting setup you can go bare bones cheap paddle, cheap kayak, cheap PFD, no electronics, and get on the water for under $500, or you can get quality equipment carbon fiber paddle ($400), kayak geared PFD ($75), kayak designed for what you want to do ($1000-$2500), good electronics ($350-$1000). So you can get on the water for as little as $600 to as much as $3-$4K just depends on what you want. It's like using a $100 casting outfit, and then stepping up to a $300 outfit, the $50 gets the job done, but the $300 outfit is more fun.

I'm also on the River Bassin site, my screen name is the same, and I'm one of the Tennessee State Representatives.

I think cookeville is the closest dealer location. Found mine in Memphis while visting . I have heard there is a back order on them? We found two in stock, so the trigger was pulled.
