Default Boat motor trouble

I got a 98 175hp Mercury 2 stroke and I was going about 50 MPH everything running just fine and been using it all week while on vacation I was headed back to the dock and it just died and wouldn’t restart. It also sounded kinda strange when turning over I think it kinda started on what seemed like only 3/6 cylinders or may have been my imagination. But seemed to almost start. A passing boater came to my assistance and said that he thinks it may be a power pack that died. I have no idea what this is. He said it controls the coils. Anybody had this problem before and do these power packs just fail on older motors? Any other suggested problems. I guess first thing I should do I pull some plugs and check for spark. Maybe a fuel filter but I didn’t think it would be instant like that. I didn’t see any oil leaking or anything broken.
