Default JPP cranking for Crappie

Put in at Long Hunter Friday afternoon water temperature was around 86° with light breeze. Fished within 1 mile around Long Hunter. Cranking 3XD and some H2O brand cranks. Ended up with 10 nice size Crappie from 11–13 inches. Also had 3 catfish, biggest was 5.6lb. Moved to a little deeper water got into a school of hybrid, caught 4 all in the 5 1/2 pound range. Strike King Chili red color was the crank of the day. Crappie wouldn’t stay off that color. Don’t ever keep hybrid but kept the Crappie and catfish.

Nice fish! Curious what depth you were trolling at?

Oh sure. I was in 20-22 FOW my crank bait probably was down at about 14 feet. Something also to add, I use 20 pound power pro braid on my most of my spinning reels with a 12 pound leader. I found this ripped the crankbaits through brush when needed and also when I hook a bigger fish I don’t break off. Also keep a Lure retriever on your boat you can save about 8 out of 10 cranks. Yesterday afternoon I think I got hung up just one time but it came off right away. Speed was 1.7 to 2.0.
