Another Caney trip

Fished below the dam and did well. Lost count as to how many I caught but pretty much every cast for 3 hours. No big ones ...Surprising thing about the trip was I caught 5 or 6 brook trout this time.. On the way home I stopped at the rest stop and tried a few minutes with no luck, the water there was badly stained from the recent storms.

Nice man!! We're you wading!? I've never fished there and want to go! Not very familiar with those waters though or this "rest stop" I hear of..

Yes I was wading. Saw your post about looking for public areas to fish, well let me say there are a few public access points with plenty area to cover wading. I was at the Buffalo valley ramp just below Center Hill dam this morning. Further down the river is Happy Hollow ramp. If you take Hwy 96 all the way to Interstate 40 and go west the next exit is the rest stop which has a special parking area for fisherman. And the last one that I know of is Betty's Island which is Hwy 96 past I-40 to St. Mary's rd till you see the sign for Betty's Island. All these areas have plenty parking. I have to warn you though Buffalo Valley and Happy Hollow get stacked with tons of people and tons of kayakers. Best to hit those areas early while its still dark then get out before the bustle of the kayak outfitters show up.

Thanks for the info..if I hit this spot I will be coming from smithville on 56 all the way up to I40..I see on my map it says I40 rest area..I assume this is the spot? I've heard story's of my grandmother floating all this area but this trout fishing is still kinda new to me..I appreciate that some of you guys are willing to share some knowledge to a "trout rookie"

Congrats man! Any pictures of the Brooks? Were they fresh stockers or had they been in there a while?

Yes the first and second pic above are the brookies, unless I was mistaken.

Those are both Browns I'm afraid. You had me excited for a second lol. Easy to mix them up.

Here is a good map of the access points. Oh and by the way I'm also a rookie trout fisherman, but I've learned a lot from this site and a couple friends who introduced me to the Caney. Heres a few more tips..Here lately I've been catching them on nightcrawlers. Late spring and early summer I was catching a lot of them with panther martins and spoons (daredevil works the best but have also used little cleos). Rooster tails work also but I don't even waste my time with them as I feel panther martins are superior to them.. Also get a trout magnet kit, they work great..Light tackle tackle is best, most here recommend 2-4lb test..I use 4lb. Fluorocarbon line is a must... I've never fly fished before so can't help you there, but I'm sure some one here can tell you about what flies work the best.. PM me sometime and maybe we can get together and I'll show you the ropes. In the mean time happy fishing.

Thanks man!! I appreciate it.. I like to fly fish..when I do its usually on the lake in between bass fishing..usually throw poppers for bass and bluegill.. I have floated from shells ford to the VFW in mcminnville a time or two back in highschool and have caught a few trout on rooster tails..probably 2 or 3 trout my whole life.. my uncle fished the FLW tour back in the day and I grew up under his wing.. He's been to Vegas and has fished all over the country but our home lake is center hill and he's since retired from fishing. We once fished a youth tournament together on Percy when I was 15 and we finished 9th out of 200 some odd boats.. bass are my main prey but something this summer has got me on this small water kick.. I have an ultra light all pro and bass pro spinning reel I paired up..spooled up with 4 lb mono for bluegill so I see a trip in my future very soon!!!

This is one of the last Brooks I caught out of the Caney. In my opinion they're about one of the prettiest fish swimming. This was fall of '14 and I don't think I've caught one since that day.

If you head to the Caney, BE SURE TO CHECK GENERATION SCHEDULES. It raises a good 3-4 feet quite quickly when the generation water hits. You don't want to be on a sandbar wading when it starts rising quickly
