Old hickory dam no smallies but a monster gar
 

No smallie today at the dam they were still pushing out a lot of water seen serval spoonbill caught u did manage a 23 inch drum and a 4ft 6 in gar I fouled hook while jigging for smallmouth

if i wanted to fish for gar, what would i use? Cut bait? Live minnows? Bottom fish? Bobber?
I could easily see myself tangling with some of them that are that size!
I think that would make a SWEET skull mount too! a sort of Hood Ornament for the front of the boat! LOL

Fish 30-65 lb braid. You don't have to use a leader that way. I use a number 8 and number 6 treble hooks. Use the 8 as the main and then the 6 as a stinger a couple inches down. I buy shiners and cut them in half and throw them without weight and under a small float. You can fish a whole shiner if you know you have larger fish in the area, you won't catch as many fish but they will be larger. When the fish takes the bait let him run with it for as long as it takes for the float to come back to the surface, at that point the fish is working the bait to the back of his mouth. When the float goes back under and starts moving, lay the hammer down. You can also throw a rope lure and catch them that way. I am going to get out some this year when the weather gets hotter, anyone is welcome to join me.

Nice fish! That is very impressive. I like your idea TNBronzeback, I would definitely stop and give you props if I saw you on the lake with that on the front of your boat.

We used to do it with Musky and Pike heads in Michigan. I think we just covered the heads in a bucket of rock salt for several months if i remember right.
That would look pretty sweet though! LOL
