Got out for the first time in a couple weeks
I got out a couple times this week for the first time in a couple weeks. I haven't fished much at all the last few weeks and none at all for the last 2.5 weeks. For me that's gotta be the first time I've not fished for 2 weeks in about 4 years. I honestly just got burnt out on night fishing, and I'm not gonna fish when it's blistering hot unless it's for a tournament.
I fished JPP Wednesday and got absolutely soaked. I spent an hour or more sitting under the Hobson Pike bridge during the worst of the rain. The water was up and a lot cleaner than I thought it would be. I caught a fish here and there but only found 1 spot that was loaded with fish. It was a spot I found last fall when the water was high. The only problem is that when I got there 5 guys were bank fishing the little bridge I wanted to fish. Normally I wouldn't get near guys fishing from the bank but I'd made a long run in the rain just to get to that exact spot. I noticed they could only fish from the top of the bridge because of the terrain around it so I slid up to the side and was making a cast that they couldn't make because they couldn't leave the bridge. I caught a fish on almost every cast for 10 minutes with only 1 keeper. This spot is dynamite when there is high rising or falling water. It's the only good spot I found. On a side note the guys that were fishing from the bridge were handlining and snagging fish. They snagged a bunch of bass and bluegill while I was there. I never saw them throw back a single fish they caught. And they were catching the same size bass I was.
I fished Center Hill this morning. The water has come up a little over 10 feet in the last week. I expected the water to have a lot of color but I was dead wrong. It was the cleanest water I've seen on that lake since winter. And the water on the bank was gin clear. I struggled to get bit. I onky caught 3 fish all day. 2 smallmouth in deep water on the main lake and one 4lb skinny largemouth in the back of a pocket. I did lose a 3lber on a buzzbait and broke a fish off on the hookset flipping a flooded tree. I'll leave a picture of the one good fish I caught today. One odd thing that caught my eye today was for some reason there has been some kind of fish kill on the hill. I saw dozens of dead catfish floating and several dead walleye, and lots of dead shad.
I have a question for you bait experts. What kinds of baitfish are in Center Hill? The bait that I saw floating looked like big threadfin shad, but didn't have the black dot that I'm used to seeing. Are there different species of threadfin?
