It's not that bad, actually. The current moves a lot slower over the flats between the island and the bank, and the river channel is on the opposite side of the island.
From the boat ramp, paddle directly across the river channel until you are on the back side of the island, then head to the mouth of the GSP. Your return trip will follow the same path. The current is dramatically reduced and the shallow water means little to no boat traffic to worry about. The river's current does swirl and form a big eddy near the ramp, but it is not much bother to get thru it...you will feel your kayak being slightly pushed sideways for a few seconds, but that's it. If you maintain speed and momentum, even the slight push from the eddy is unnoticeable.
