I like to use a Heddon Tiny Torpedo, remove the front hooks (it will constantly entangle the trailer line), tie on a three foot fluorocarbon leader (6# test) and then either a 1 1/2 inch white twister tail or a killer klatt crappie magnet on the end of that.

This way, I'm giving the larger fish a more substantial meal while using the torpedo as a casting plug. It's fun when you get a double going because I'm only using 4# green nanofil line on a lite action 7" rod.

And like I mentioned in a different post, I'll pinch down the barb on the hook holding the crappie magnet, slide a long shank bream hook over the barb, then pull the barb back up to hold on the bream hook. This catches 60% of the short strike. Just like using a trailer hook on a spinnerbait.

I got mine at Academy, but they are the weighted kind....great for casting a long distance, but hard on the rod and the arm if you arent equipped for it.
I dont know if i should have got the non-weighted or not. i saw a 3-pack for under $2 and i snatched em up!
