First big cold front

So, what's this cold front doing to our fish?

Water temps are still decent, but the pressure change after 2 fronts has done a number on our scaly brethren, I'm sure. But what, exactly? Are the river/creek fish as affected as the lake fish?


I've never personally been a big fall angler, especially for bass. Fall usually means deer season, so growing up, my dad and I transitioned to the tree stands when the cold fronts started coming through.

Nismo......as one who fishes 4-5 days a week I pay attention to the fronts.....and agree with your assumptions. I have found on smaller waters it is not as bad. Meaning small lakes and small streams. But since I read a piece by Doug Markham a few years back I have subscribed to his theory on the fronts "You won't know if you don't go". So now I just go anyway and see how it is.....not the very best strategy but better than not going.......LOL. Am going too hit it Monday again.

I'm looking to be going Tuesday. I hit the Stones Tuesday and Thursday, bounced between both Forks. Water is WAY low compared to what it was a month ago, but I'm hoping the rain helped that a little. Bass were very spooky and wouldn't even look at a lure. I'm itching to get into the fall smallie bite, if I can find any wading.

Definitely, you wont know if you don't go. Fronts affect different waters differently as well as within a body of water. On big fronts i would go deep or to a moving water environment. Shallow fish are more changed by big fronts in my opinion.

Also i tend to go smaller and slower with baits as the fronts get stronger.
