Pickwick 6-30-2014
Went to Pickwick hoping to get into some white bass...stripers. They had generators 3...5....and 6 going. That is not conducive to good bank fishing on generator side. I cooked in those rocks for over 2 hours hoping all that action going on in the middle of the river would come my way...or hoping generator number one would come on. Neither one happened. The striper and whites were busting top water at boil number three though boil number five. There were two boats out at boil number three cat-fishing and they were filling their boats up with nice cats...a fish on every cast. I moved to a point down river hoping to get in some action but after that walk down those rocks and another hour of casting it was no go. Hiked out of there and went up to the park on the lake and caught some 6-7 inch Gills......not quite what I was looking for.....so I loaded up and drove over to lock side. Sat in those rocks for almost 2 hours hoping for anything. Even though I was taking plenty of fluids I started feeling sick to my stomach and from my years of experience working in Saudi I knew it was time to get out of the heat. I made one last cast and got a hit on a Bison Trout Magnet. When I set the hook I thought I was hung...then the fish realized it was hooked. I caught a nice...very chunky... 17 inch large mouth. He gave a great battle on the 2# test line. Took a couple of pics and up that long sidewalk I headed. Wednesday looks like the day to bank fish according to water release schedule. Will hit it again somewhere tomorrow.

Some days it's fishin, some days it's catchin. Sounds like today was a fishin day.
But watch that heat tomorrow, 96 degrees and with this humididitty, it's gonna be heat stroke/heat exhaustion conditions. Fish early, then leave, please.

Yeah that heat is a killer. I just checked schedule and they are cranking them up early tomorrow for a 40,000 CFS average. There are shad everywhere so hoping it will be a productive day for the whites. They will have to have all 6 going to make that average so number one will have to be on. Won't know if I don't go.....LOL. Hard to believe for 21 years I worked out in temps regularly 105 to 115 and higher and didn't seem to mind.....age changes everything.....LOL. But I hear you Merv. Got to use caution.

I know some day I won't be able to do it, but I just passed 12 hrs in this heat, 8 of those running a weedeater. Luckily only working 8 tomorrow. Good luck tomorrow Randy! Stay cool!

My son and I use to fish down there quite often when temps were approaching or above 100. Take a small cooler full of ice and a little water and dip a towel in there to put around your neck. That kept us going for many hours in what normally for me are intolerable conditions. Even sitting out in a boat tied to the wing wall it would be miserable.

As the heat continues to climb, and the A/C's are cranked up, the TVA will crank up the water. With all the rains lately, it's a good thing we have the water to spare.

I usually carry frozen bottles of water in my cooler to help the ice last longer which it does, but also to have with me if I get too hot. When I do get to feeling bad, I dig a frozen water bottle out and place it on the inside of my wrist on the blood vessels and hold it there. It will help cool you down pretty quick, and well enough to make the journey to the ramp to load up.
Everyone be careful out in the heat.
