Default Laurel Hill 06-20-2014

Thought long and hard before putting kayak in today. It was hot but I wanted to fish and play with the side imaging. Looked for some deep water Gills and found them but a little too breezy to stay on them. I have an anchor but it is too bulky and will try to get a 3 pound claw this weekend. I went back into the bay where I launched and decided to scan all the beds I have marked to see if fish had moved back onto them. Well most beds had no fish on them at all. Some of the beds had 3 and 4 fish on them. I would catch 2 or 3 and hit another one. I only caught 12 Gills today. There were in the 8 inch range but fought hard. Today was really satisfying as I had to work to find these fish and had to work to catch them. It is one thing to mark a bed with the GPS...pull up on it and catch a ton of fish if the bed is full of Gills. But when there are just a few that GPS can't put you on top of one fish....you can get close though. So I would fan cast around my Lindy bouy and pick up as many as I could before moving on. If I had seen only 4 fish on a bed when I caught 3 I would move on. It worked out pretty good. I only fished about 3 hours...just too hot and my juice was running low. Cant wait to get out again.

Default Gills marked in bed

Side imaging takes a little getting used to so here are pics of the fish marked.

I'm no expert in this...Merv has been using this technology way before me.....but, it looks like bait fish with larger fish feeding IMHO. Have you ever put the cursor over something like that and zoomed in? When I first saw the beds today in regular view I knew right away there were fish holding in the bed....but I zoomed in for a better look. This is amazing technology for us fisherman who use it. I love to fish but putting the kayak in now is an exciting adventure....LOL. It was so hot today and I didn't want to go, but I thought I could find some fish. Just read a report that the shell cracker bite is on at Center Hill....but on or off gravel points. My spots I fish don't have any gravel points so I am going to have to find some and go up there next week. I think due to lack of any gravel bottom, boulders, or deep weeds at Laurel Hill is why I am finding the deep water Gills just suspended anyplace. That makes them harder to find...there is nothing there for them to really relate to.

You are getting really good at locating these fish. The gills and crappie didn't have much of a chance before but look out now! Nice screenshots and fish.
