"Pulling" for Crappie

I need to go hit up woods one day. My mom fishes it and does very well. I know nothing about the lake fishing wise, but I am sure I with time I could figure it out.

The water temps are just about right for trolling crankbaits for crappie too.

75-80 degrees is when I start trolling cranks.

I caught a few on cranks last week when the water was 73-74, a little coolish yet.

The few I did catch were 12-14 inchers.

I troll cranks with similar setup. Use 300 Bandits at 1.8 mph.

In the video, I am trolling with Crappie Master double-cross jig heads (1/8 oz. Nickel) with Crappie Master tails. The lines are 8 pound test and two jig heads are tied onto each line using the Palomar knot. I added a small split shot to some of the lines to vary the depth a little. These jig setups are trolled at 1.0 mph to achieve the correct depth. The rods at the side of the boat in addition to the jig, have a small crappie hooks added with minnows.

OK, I was wondering what you were doing, saw the minnow bucket and the fish you caught on jigs, thought you might have had a little of everything out. I have to hand it to you, you were skipping some of those crappie across the water pretty good. That's what it looks like when I have a small bass on 65lb braid, once you get the fish on plane they come right in

I just make a normal cast to set the rods out, no specific distance.

I think you can leave out the minnows all together but I just have not made the total transition. It is like on the back two poles in the center, I still use 1/4 oz. unpainted jig heads (red hooks) with white or pearl twister tails because it is a legacy of how I started using the slow troll technique.

Nice video! Trolling is my favorite way to fish for crappie.

Thanks for posting this info Merv!, I never thought this style of fishing could be tracked by water temps, but I recon it is, I figure they would scatter once they are finished with the spawn regardless of water temp or time of year, we will give them a shot this weekend pulling some bandits
