KY Lake 5/16/2014

Had to fight some wind today but had a good day. I caught 51 Gills.....all between 8-9 inches. Got 8 Smallies all 11-12 inches.....a few spots at 10 inches or less and a 25 inch buffalo. All fish caught on a Purple Redemption Trout Magnet using 2# test SOS line. Hoping soon to have a 60-70 fish day of those 10-11 inch Smallies. That size Smallie is probably the most fun one can have on a UL using 2# test. The buffalo took a while to get in. It made 4 big runs each time it saw me and the net......that SOS line is some tough stuff.

Nice fish. That buffalo's eyes seem to face straight forward, rather than be on the sides of it's head.

Thanks.....Yeah...that SOS 2# test copolymer is really good line. Plus the drag on my reel is superb......and yes I was very lucky....LOL. That fish had the Trout Magnet in the center of his upper lip. At first I was disappointed when I saw what it was....and then my thoughts turned to "I must land this fish". Took quite a while but it ended well.

Very nice Mr Randy, landing that big fish is a feat in itself on 2 lb line!! congrats!!, what size of jig head do you throw and how deep do you estimate these fish were holding at??, thanks in advance!!

It was on a 1/32 ounce jig head and was about 8 feet down.

maybe I missed it in one of your pictures, but what kind of reel are you using?

I've been using a Pflueger President ultralight for a few years for my panfish rod, but I'm always open to other recommendations.

Have you ever used the Berkley Nanofil line (I seem to recall it also being a copolymer)?

Just curious if you have compared them and your reasons for why the SOS is superior. I've used the 8# test Nanofil on my "white bass" rod. I like it a lot, but the line is not clear (it's white), and the tiny diameter makes using leaders a bit nerve-wracking. I was considering experimenting with something else on my panfish rod, and you've got me interested in this SOS stuff.

The reel is a Daiwa Luvias, a JDM reel......purchased from Digitaka in Japan. It is one fine reel.

I have been using NanoFil since the day they released it. It is a braid that casts further than any line on the market. It has it's draw backs...I use a leader all the time as it has very little abrasion resistance. SOS is a copolymer.....it and NanoFil are two completely different lines. The NanoFil is superior for feel but has no stretch at all. The SOS line is a great all around line.....very strong and manages well on a reel. It just depends on what I am fishing for...where....and what kind of waters I am fishing as to which line I use. But you won't go wrong with SOS line.....I think it is the best line...for the money...you can buy. If you do a forum search on NanoFil and SOS line you will find a lot more detailed info.
