Today was my best day this year.
I took my daughters to Whipporwill Lake. We fished from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. I started out twitching a bison TM. The bite on the TM was not what it has been, only 3-4 small largemouth.
The wind was roaring, which was unexpected, so I stopped twitching the TM and put on a float. The bluegill were as I have expected the last few weeks farther off shore. I caught 5-6. The harder the wind blew the quicker/easier the catching was. They were all hand sized but not real big just decent size. Lots of fun on light tackle and long casts.
While catching bluegill, I watched the largemouth chasing bluegills. When the bluegill bite petered out, I switched to a 3" slider grub in green pumpkin on a 1/16 oz spider head. I caught 7-8 more largemouth. All cookie cutter 14-16" fish. I tried a lot of different retrieves. The best was retrieving the grub instantly as fast as possible with short pauses mixed in.
I switched to a lizard in camo and then a SK zero in green pumpkin both on the 1/16 oz slider head in an effort to catch a big bass. I managed one more cookie cutter bass before it was time to head home.
An interesting note, I talked to the lady who runs the bait shop. The last two times I have been out there they had a sign out stating that all fisherman must check out so I asked about it today. TWRA chooses 6 days each month at random and has her interview all fisherman to see what they caught and measure what they kept. Pretty cool to learn how active they are in managing the Family Fishing Lakes.
