Outboard fuel
I was told that I should be running the highest octane non ethanol fuel I can through my 25hp Yamaha outboard.
I knew that non ethanol was better for the motor but never considered the octane. Is this true?

I run the cheap stuff through my Johnson 150 fast strike. I tried other grades and the ethanol treatment and got poor results. I did the fuel treatment and my boat ran like crap. I just had all my cylinders compression tested and they are great for a motor the age of mine. Now smaller motors may be different.

I've been running 87 octane 10% ethanol through mine since day one.. I was told that's bad for it. It seems to run fine but I don't want to spend a boat load to repair stuff that ethanol tears up.

I am sure TK can give an answer but what does the manufacture say? I have a nephew who runs premium in his 4 year old 200 HP yet the manufacture clearly says it was designed to run on 87 octane. I think he is wasting a lot of money.
Regards

If I could quote both of the last two post I would. My motor is a 96 model and runs great on 87 with ethanol. I don't make premium gas money for as much fishing as I do

I ran ethanol gas in my old boat for years without a problem, but, it didn't sit still for more than a week at most. I think that's where problems arise is when people put ethanol gas in and let the boat sit for weeks, months at a time.

Thanks, TK.. There's a Pure gas station close to my house and I will be getting my fuel from them for now on.

Everybody complains about the high prices of marina gas, but unless I am mistaken, it is 100% with extra taxes (which go to fuel spills cleanups and boat ramp repairs). Just another option, especially if 100% is hard to find in your area.

I had a Pure by me that had 100% and they swapped to the ethanol mix.

Heiny, I have heard both pros and cons on additives ... So far more good than bad ... I personally have not seen or know of any adverse problems from using it .... <'TK><

Thanks TK, I bought my boat used last year and have been using Mercury quick klean and star bright water remover. It runs better now than when I bought it. Maybe the cleaner is removing some carbon. It had been sitting awhile so I'm sure things were gummed up.
