Black and Decker Electric Knife Review
With my 20 year old American Angler MT3 with shark blades going out last night, I needed an electric knife quickly since I was going fishing again today. After reading many good reviews about the Black and Decker EK700 at Walmart for $10, I decided to give this one a try.
Today, I cleaned 5 crappie with the Black and Decker. My short review:
Grip: Comfortable
Blades: Wider than shark blades, not as sharp, blades are flexible like shark blades.
Blades were easy to lock-in place. There's two tabs on side to press, in order to release blades. The American Angler had the blade release button on top, right where one would place their thumb. That was a negative feature on the American Angler.
Cutting Power: The Black and Decker didn't seem to have the same torque as the American Angler. I didn't have to worry about cutting through the backbone or cutting through the skin.
Trigger: Located on bottom, comfortable position, also has a trigger lock.
Blade Interchange Ability: Looks like one has to use Black and Decker blades only. They lock-in differently verses the American Angler and other electric knifes which are all similar.
Overall Impression: The Black and Decker did a good job in filleting the crappie, though I wish it was more powerful and wish the blades were sharper. The knife did have some difficultly getting through some of the rib or fin bones. All filets came out fine, similar to the ones by the American Angler.
Rating scale: (1-Lowest, 10-Highest)
I would give the Black and Decker a 6.5, for $10 its a good value.

Thanks for the review! I used an electric carving knife tonight and it didn't work out as well as I hoped.

Well, I think today was the 4th time I've used the Black and Decker electric knife and it no longer could fillet any crappie. After reading many good reviews about this knife, I'm disappointed it only lasted a few times. Cleaned less than 50 fish and it no longer works. New rating = 1.
Bought the Mister Twister Piranha from Academy Sports for $35+tax and cleaned 10 crappie with it today. Wow, its smooth and has plenty of power. I was able to fillet the crappie quickly and all the fillets came out great. Excellent purchase.

I average cleaning over 1000 fish per year. In my opinion it is hard to beat a mister twister. I also prefer the 9" blades, even for bluegill and I generally use one for 3 years or so before it wears out. I recently purchased the pirahna from Academy but the regular mister twister is what I have always used with the 9" blades.

Thanks for the review. Mister Twister for the win. I have 3 electrics, and my favorite is the Mister Twister. I haven't used it on fish in years, but it does great work on hams, turkey, and sliced pork also.

I use a Mister Twister brand as well, but I've always wondered whether I should try out a different one when this one wears out. Looks like I'll probably stick with it, as I have no complaints, and most of the other options on the market for comparable price don't sound any better.

My two cents worth ... <'TK><
I use two fillet knives ... I have a 15 year old 12 VDC cord type Rapala with two sets of blades different lengths etc. ... My favourite ... Nice ergonomic handle and electrical adapters ... and well made ... Quality and this is the one I use to fillet Fish ... Now the latest and greatest Rapala is the cordless with chargers ... Even better ... But pricey .. $$ ..
I also have a American Angler 110 VAC unit that I used for years for fish but retired it to the house for hams, Turkey, etc. ... It is about 20 Years old .. It is cheap .. It is like trying to hold a Baseball Bat at the fat end ... But is has always done it's thing ... Just my 2 cents worth .... <'TK><

TK, maybe my hands are messed up, but I hate the Rapala electric knives. To keep them turned on my hand cramps up after just a couple minutes. Way to hard to keep them running.
