I hit Jpp for 3 hours today I caught two like the fish in the pic. I lost 3. My question is is this a baby rockfish or baby hybrid? All the fish were caught on a white and chartruse curly tail.

Thats a stripe, aka white bass

I take that back, thats probably a hybrid, stripe only has only one line all the way to the tail I believe

Hybrid.

When striped bass are young enough to be this short, they are more streamlined in shape. The stocky body and broken, but distinct, stripes identify this fish as a hybrid.

The best clue to look for is the stripes going to the end of the tail. Only one stripe goes to the end of the tail on a white bass. This is definitely a hybrid.

Sometimes it's pretty obvious with body type but the only way to tell for sure is the tooth patch. White Bass have a single tooth patch on the tongue and hybrid have two. Striper have two patches as well but they have a wide separation between them. Hybrid's patches are right together almost.

It's definitely a hybrid.

Re: the tooth patches, I've seen hybrids where the division between the tooth patches was very indistinct, and it really looked like a single tooth patch. So be careful with that indicator on small fish.

Thanks guys. I thought it was a hybrid but someone told me it was a "striper". I hate all the nicknames that people give the fish in that family. It gets REALLY confusing.
