Blade baits

Can anyone shed some light on these lures and the proper techniques? A friend of mine was telling me they are killer this time of year but I have never used them...heck, had never heard of them. From what I was able to find, they are basically used like a flutter spoon? Have any of you used these with any luck?

You can fish it like a jig off of points and drop offs or you can use it over suspended bass jigging it straight up and down over them. I will tell you that if you are fishing them on lakes with lots of rock such as Dale Hollow or Centerhill you better buy them by the dozen because you will loose a bunch of them.

I did well on JPP a few weeks ago jigging off deep points in the bait balls. I was doing a 2-3 ft swidt sweep up to vibrate the bait and then lower down the rate it sinks, but with keeping the line tight. All my hits came on the drop. The hybrid were inhaling them.

There may not be a nickel's worth of difference in them, but my preference is the "steel shad" They seem to be a good bait for bass and white bass as well. I have never jigged them though. I always yo-yoed them off the bottom.

I believe the Silver Buddy was the origin of blade lures. I have caught some good fish by vertical jigging and cranking these. Next was the Gay Blade (usually kept in the closet).
Bass Pro has blade baits.

May not be any, this may be a matter of semantics. To my way of thinking, jigging implies fishing it the same way you would a sauger jig...vertically. I fish a steel shad by casting it, then hopping it back across the bottom, much like fishing a fly n rind.

I have caught a bunch of bass in the cumby nomad on a silver buddy. Cast parralel to the bluffs and just crank it back giving a short pull or two mixed in. I like the smaller i guess its 1/4 oz.

I made up about 20 of them in glow white powder paint to test out but I haven't caught anything on it yet except me.............woody
