Caney 11/2 & 11/3
Made it to the Caney on Saturday night to fish with txnative. He caught some nice ones. As the night went on only the smaller trout seemed to want to play. Small cranks and TM's in white would catch about as many brook trout as you wanted all night long. Around 3am it started to get pretty chilly so we made a fire and stayed warm until daybreak. Post sunrise didn't bring a lot of changes, you could still catch about all the brooks and few rainbows that you wanted.
No browns to speak of at all...anywhere. Very few rainbows.
We also found it odd that the water felt warm, discolored and had a sulfur smell to it. I don't think I can remember the Caney having the "floating bubbles" like the Cumby below Old Hick does in the summer before.
Something seems off on the river but can't quite put my finger on it.
Here's a few brook trout pics attached and the biggest was close to 14"

Thanks for the post...sounds like fun...I need to do a night fish soon...we caught 59 Friday up there on the Caney, but nothing big and mostly brooks...34 the Friday before that with the same results as far as size goes...we did see and rescue about a 26 inch brown that was by the ramp at the dam...looked as if when the water dropped it got caught in a puddle so we put it back in the pond area...I wish I had gotten a picture holding it!

The trip was a huge success for me since I made it through the night with only the cold to bother me. This was my first kayak venture since my surgery in October, and I'm thrilled that I had no problems or pain. The walleye was a nice bit of icing to the cake, too.

Not saying the river is crap by any stretch but it's definitely not close to the pre-dam shape it seems. I am leaving the fish out of the equation just speaking river.
After the night of catching brook on top of brook with trout magnets, Alpha you could go up there and fish 24hrs probably catch 1500 trout....if you wanted.

I get that smell sometimes below Normandy and JPP. Got to admit catching those brooks are a lot of fun. Glad you got into them.

I was on Caney today for about 1 1/2 hours.I gave up,to much wind. As soon as I got there I caught 10 on Gainer,Orange and Gold, in about 30 minutes and then wind got crazy and I decided another day to fish would be coming soon.
Caught 14 and had one nice one on but barbless jig heads are causing a few to get off.
I did not smell anything unusual and the water was very clear.

We were right below the Dam. Maybe they had more rain from the end of the week than we did or something. Wish I could have taken some pics.
It was weird.

Worked out a deal with txnative for his Mainstream KingFish. Maybe some of his mojo will still be on it.
Can't wait to start tinkering with it.

I'm gonna scrape the mojo residue out and use it to "season" the new kayak...although the walleye I put in it this past weekend may have done it.
