Finally, after I don’t know how many years of fishing, I caught fish on a topwater lure. I’m kind of ashamed to admit I’ve never caught a fish on topwater before today but in my own defense, as it were, I’ve never had the patience to fish topwater…I’d make a few casts and then lay the rod down and go with something I had confidence in. But I had recently bought a couple of the Duo Realis Popper 64's and I just got my new Revo MGX reel in so I wanted to test both the reel and the new lure. I’m happy to say that the Revo MGX is the most smooth-casting reel I have ever used (Even better than my Daiwa Sol, something I never thought I'd say). They claim that popper weighs .033 oz. but it sure feels a lot lighter than that…and with that MGX reel, I was able to throw it a long, long way with no problems, even into a light wind.
The fish were biting from the time I started till the fog lifted and the sun hit the water…then the bite absolutely died. I tried almost everything in my tackle bag but at around 8 or so, the fish developed lockjaw…I hung around for a while longer and then headed home around 10 (day off = honey do's
). The Cumberland still has lots of debris floating in it; water was pretty stained and water temps ranged from 76 -78. The spotted bass in pic 2084 was caught on a Ultra Vibe Speed Craw, the other 3 were caught on that topwater lure.
