Gills at Pickwick

Went to Pickwick today to try the tailrace and the flat for bass and or some white bass.....caught neither. Was looking at my fishing records and I saw I was only 12 days away from when Gills have been showing up deep off of a point up in the lake. Now I have tried that spot all summer just to see if they were there and they have not been. So instead of coming home without catching any fish I decided to give it a try. Sat on the same rock as I did this time last year.....casted to the same spot...... used my tungsten jig head with Bison colored Trout Magnet.....counted down to 30 seconds.... went through all the things I had in my records and when the first cast got down to 28 seconds a Gill hit it. It was a great day.....as long as I was close to the spot it was a Gill or a missed fish every cast. Been waiting for 16 September but looks like they have shown up a little early. All the fish were 7 inches....last year they were 8 and 9 inch fish. Hoping those size do start showing up. The same spot also produces Smallies. Did not catch any today but had two huge ones follow a caught Gill all the way to the bank....a lot of fun to watch. Caught two big drum and while I will not usually take pics of them I was pretty proud of the fact I got both of them in on 2# test line. The Gills are really colored up nice coming out of the clear water. Water temps were 86 on surface. So if things go as in the past the Gills should be there everyday up through November December.

Look forward to reading your post Alphahawk been reading them for a while now great info and advice you give out I fish every chance I get been keeping a log every time I go out it has helped me catch more fish over the last 8 years I always go back and check the dates what I was using water temp and all really helps when you no what's going and don't have to waste a lot of time searching them out again thanks for your post and pictures good luck and God bless tight lines.

Congrats on hooking up with the fish again. Catching smaller gills beats catching nothing. You're showing us versatility that most of us don't exercise......especially me!

Thanks...I am now making my logs more complete after reading a post TK replied to about all the things to put in the log. It may take a couple of years to build an analysis but it is worth it. I am in the process of redoing old logs into a program that records things I did not put down at the time...moon phase....moon rise and so on.

Thanks Merv......I will go back tomorrow but will not waste my time on the flat or tail race. Will take my 7' 2" trout rod which will be more fun than my UL. My old reports tell me I should start fishing those places in late September and October. We had that anomaly of all that rain and Pickwick was spilling that 220,000 CFS for two weeks and I was catching all those bass and just became obsessed with catching more after the water went down. Just wasted my time but those two weeks of pulling in those things got me hooked back on large mouth...LOL. But man I love the Gill action.

Went back to Pickwick today. Started fishing at 10:30 AM and before I knew it it was 2:30 PM. The Gills today were a little longer and chunkier. Caught the one catfish....gave me a good tussle on 2# test. Probably caught well over 100 Gills today. It was almost every cast. Don't know if I will go back tomorrow as I need to get ready for my fishing trip out to the White River next week but it will be hard to sit at home knowing they are in there. Am hoping when I get back from Arkansas the really fat 9 inch ones will be up and should also start getting some of those 12 inch Smallies. Caught these today using Purple Redemption and the new color which I have been told will be named "Millie". It is the same color as the Killer Klatt Crappie Magnet. Am just about out of my 5mm tungsten jig heads....gonna have to find some soon. .
