Default Caney Fork 8-30-13

Got the wife out and we did a float from the dam to happy. We paddled from 4:30-8:30. Beautiful night on the water, but fishing was the hardest I have ever had it out there! I caught 1 yellow bass, 3 bluegill, and a small brown. I tried everything, and about 9 different colors of TM's. I finally got some follows and misses from pink. Even had some 16-18" fish circling and swiping at the bait, but wouldn't eat it. Usually it's easy to catch the stocker size fish on low water, not for me last night! But still a great time with the wife!

Thanks nomad! And you are right! Can't expect to catch them all the time!

You get passed by a supreme being rowed? He had a pretty good day in the morning. Sorry your trip didn't pan out.

You going next weekend?

Nope, saw 1 canoe, a Jon boat, and 5 waders from dam to happy. Quite peaceful!!

Not sure about next weekend, parents will be around, so if I do, it will probably just a below dam trip in the boat.

I can agree with you about Caney.Compared to last year or the last five years, the river is not fishing as before. I went yesterday AM to try my new fly fishing skills using Mini T M's and only caught 10 in 1 1/2 hours.I will say the last one was the best in size so far on the Caney.I decided to take a nap and go back at noon and try again after generation. In 3 1/2 hours i caught 27 and they were caught mostly in last hour and were all so small.
I will say it is the same on the Elk.You use to be able catch some nice trout there also, not any more.
All I can say,I will keep trying because it just has to return.

One thing I noticed is that the river is COVERED in big gizzard shad from the dam to happy, huge schools everywhere. Must be from all the summer generation we got this year. There should be a bunch of big fat browns ready this fall!

Don't feel bad I've been skunked out there my last four trips in a row. I was on some nice browns in June but can't get much more than a follow or two lately. Having said that - I'm only fishing with big baits and don't mess with the stockers but still that's about 10 hours of driving with nothing to show for it!

Oh yeah the Caney sucks, I went with my trout magnets and only caught ten in the first hour and 30 in the second hour, and after only 1,000 in the third hour I decided this is so pitiful I should just go home.
