White/Black Crappie
Got out on Priest Saturday morning for some crappie fishing. "Only 30% chance of an afternoon storm" said the weather man. Well about 11 or so, i was headed off the water from the 100% storm cell that was headed my way. After that little intermission, i was back at. Had to re-adjust my location back to normal lake levels after all the high water. i found the fish in 14-15ft, lots of gills and small cats too!
One thing i did notice and has me wondering was how the crappie were hitting. I was using minnows and hooking them so they were really squirmy. Maybe this was just a coincedance, but the white crappie would smash that minnow like it owed it money, but the black crappie were a bit more moody, with the typical peck peck peck they like to do.
are the 2 fish that different tempermant wise that even in the same school, all the white crappies would crush it, while the black crappies bit like they were too good for my gas station minnows? LOL.
got my limit so im not complaining in no way, just curious as to why that might be.

Interesting observation... I've never noted a difference in the way the two species hit. However I rarely fish minnows.

Nice mess of fish. I haven't used a minnow in years to fish for crappie but fishing with a jig I couldn't tell you if it was a white or black crappie that hit. They all will be hitting the same.

i try to use live bait as little as possible, especially in the summer cause its a hassle, but when im crappie fishing i always have a few dozen just in case.
Ive used jigging rapala's, Bobby Garlands, twister tails, tubes, trout/crappie magnets....all with very very minimal results. they would hit everything, but they wouldnt commit to it. Best artificial bite ive had on priest has been trolling, but the particular area i fish has so much boat traffic, trolling in my boat is nearly impossible fighting all the criss crossing waves. the cats would smash the jigging rapala though if anybody wanted to add another tool to thier catfishing equipment.
I know crappies can be very tempermental, if something isnt just right, they have a tendancy to just play with it, but i found it odd that the 2 species hit totally different saturday. Maybe it was the weather, or maybe it was just coincenance. Interesting sure enough though.

the online guide is mis-leading. In the State Wide Regulations it says 15 (with the exception of region-1 which is 30. But if you look under the Reservoirs section, it does in fact say 30.
why they insist upon having different information in 2 different area's telling you to refer to section blah blah is beyond me. Why dont they just break the book down into the 4 regions and scrap the "state-wide" section?
Oh well, no biggie, i toss em back most of the time anyways! LOL
