Old hick 7/23
Hit old hick around 6:30 pm to test out the new yak (details of kayak in fishing gear forum) and hopefully catch a few fish. Before I even launched I could see white bass going nuts in the middle of the cove I was in and packs of largemouth crashing bait on the banks, particularly near willow grass. I decided to pursue the white bass with my fly rod since that would better test the new kayak's stability and because it is simply more fun. I caught several in the 12-14 inch size on a sz 4 chartreuse/white clouser stripped quickly through surface busting fish. I also picked some up on a 2.5" big bite bait cane thumper on a 1/8 oz jighead using a lift/drop retrieve whenever the surface activity died.
After dark, I switched to lm bass fishing. I had all my luck on a Yamamoto hula grub in green pumpkin tx-rigged on a 4/0 wide gap hook with a 1/4 oz bullet weight. I would pitch it tight to the banks near docks, willow grass, and laydowns, then use the usual lift/drop retrieve. Caught 4 bass from 8:30-10, all in the 14-16" size range. I did lose two, the first was me being stupid and seeing if I could ease the bass to the kayak without setting the hook (he let go about 2 ft from the kayak) and the other was a hog that just got off...threw the hook on a head shake, heart fell into my stomach when it happened. Overall good few hours, I will probably hit the same area again this weekend.
