Default Pickwick Tailrace 07-16-2013

Started fishing at 9:00 AM......started up the rocks at 1:15 PM. For about 3 hours the water was steady but my last hour to fish the water started falling off as they started closing some gates. Still caught fish the last hour but the catch rate slowed way down. Wasn't a white bass to be had....disappointed in that. Used my light action rod today with 4# test NanoFill and 6# test fluorocarbon leader. The lure of choice was a Killer Klatt Crappie Magnet on a 1/8 ounce head.....and the Smallies seem to prefer the Trout Magnet in white.....the Gills were hitting the Crappie Magnet....and I mean hitting it hard. Caught 10 Smallies....11 to 12 inches. The large mouth were still there just didn't get any hits from the big boys. Caught around 50 large mouth in the 14 and 15 inch range. Also caught about two dozen 8 inch male Gills....really chunky fish. The fight was really good on the light rod. The water is going to continue to drop off this week and will probably stabilize around Friday...I hope anyway. Water temp this morning was 86 degrees and water is slightly stained....and getting clearer. Falling water is not the best conditions for catching fish in a tail race. Don't know if I will hit Pickwick again until Thursday or not. My new River Rocker lures will arrive tomorrow....the ones Doug Markham is high on.....really looking forward to trying them out. Am hoping the water will get down to 367 feet and I can fish a flat I know and catch them in the jumps.

Regards

With the water clearing up down there all the fish are displaying some good colors.

Alpha, I know you kept thinking I would show up and slow the catch rate.

Welcome anytime Sambolie. It was empty today except a man and his grandson fishing to the right of me a little. But tomorrow the catwalk should be out of the water and it will be packed then. Don't know if I will go back there tomorrow or not. My River Runners should be here by 2:00 PM and may hang around till they come and try to hit the evening bite there. The Caney is blown out....Laurel Hill is not producing right now....so who knows.
