Default Trout magnet question

Have any of you had a problem with bass hitting your float? I took the girls out the other day and I had one 14 inch largemouth come up and grab my float and when I set the hook, it hooked him in the tail. I like to have never landed him on 2 pound test. I had another largemouth come up and grab the float and swim off but I did not hook him. I was using a small peg style styrofoam float. Maybe I need to use one a little bigger?
