Laurel Hill 06-24-2013
Caught these things all day long.....had a ball. They were in 20 feet of water. Had to use a 1/16 jig head. Also got into the Shell Crackers and Copper Nose. The Shell Crackers were all around 10 inches....the Copper Nose were 9 inches but the girth was very large. No pics as camera broke. The door for battery compartment broke off...figures....now got to spend more money. These fish were obviously on bed. But what a mixture of fish on one bed...Shell Crackers....Copper Nose....northern strain....and cross between Gill and Shell Cracker. Should make for some interesting fish.

Man those are some big gills!! Lately I've been catching tons of these on trout magnets but seem to only catch smaller ones with the largest being around 6-7". How do you target the larger ones that are fillet worthy?

Creekcrappie I order those from a guy in Florida with a #8 hook. I use them when the fish are down deep.

Jimmy first off Laurel Hill is one of the best bluegill waters in the state.....so that is a big advantage for me. Even though there may be some issues down there it still produces big Gills. I haven't done my best there yet...I hope anyway. I want that 10 to 11 inch Copper Nose out of there. The bigger Gills will....generally speaking....bed in deeper water.....and hang out in deeper water. So if you are catching 7 inch Gills off of a bed you may want to move back and cast to the deeper water. I do the same on KY Lake and Pickwick....look for them deep.

Great gills and have you ever tried a tiny jigging spoon with a single hook and a twister grub or the tiny hula popper. It work great for monster gills in Delaware.................woody

Great looking gills Alpha. We need to get together as soon as I can find a rod I'm satisfied with. Bought a G.Loomis last weekend I thought was going to work, but it's still stiffer than what I'm looking for. I had a Micro Light rod years ago, but it was to whippy, I have a Wally Marshall, but don't really care for it it just doesn't feel right. I'll be matching it up with a 1000ML CI4 that I spooled with 3# test, and the smallest Pfluger President they make that is also spooled with 3#, the Pfluger is smaller than the CI4.

Thanks Woody.....I do fish the 1/12 ounce Kastmaster spoons....I also change the treble hook out with a single. When I started using Trout Magnet quit using twister grubs. I have some Crick Hopper Poppers from Rebel that I intend to try out when the weather is a little hotter and those Gills move up shallow late evening. I will look for tiny Hula Poppers....thanks.

Thanks Jeremy......funny you mentioned the Loomis. I had never owned one until about two weeks ago. I traded rods plus some cash for their trout rod in a 7' 2" one piece. It is the one made with the GL 2 blank. At first I didn't like it.....but now love it. They have a trout rod on the GLX blank which is considerable more money but I will have to wait a while to try that one...LOL.
