Default local creek - feisty snapping turtles

I was messing around in a creek in Nashville yesterday and just before I could begin recording a video (that I can't get to upload) these two snapping turtles were absolutely mauling each other. I'm not sure which gender suffered the gashes on its back (on the top of the picture) but they didn't seem to mind me being around. I'm assuming they're about to mate or could this be two males fighting over territory/females?

Alright, that's it. I'm for sure not fishing with you. I value my toes.
