Default Big creek smallie

Got out to the creek today and it started off with a nice 19" smallie on topwater. I landed several more from 15-18 inches, then the sun came out and the bite stopped for about 2 hours. I switched to a tube, made a cast to a deep hole and hooked a beast. After a crazy fight I landed this 22" smallmouth.

Nice smallie!

Prespawn female or one with an eating disorder?

Great fish. Topwater Smallie, in a creek, you just can't beat that.

That's awesome! Congrats. My buddy caught his first creek smallmouth over 20" last year and it changed his life forever!

As far as topwater lures go, I like buzzbaits, walk the dog baits, and larger poppers. Upsize your lures to target the bigger fish. Someone asked if the fish was a "wall hanger", I couldn't imagine keeping that fish. The best part was watching it swim off. A fiberglass replica can be made from a pic and looks way better than a skin mount anyway.

I am the one who asked and I am proud of you for the release. I would do the same. Several years ago it would have been on my wall but not today. I don't even keep the big crappy and BG. I want to keep the good genes in the gene pool.
